Although Marlene is relatively new to the Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston area, she has spent most of her life in rural areas of Ontario and enjoys the lifestyle of small communities.
A first generation Canadian, she grew up in Gravenhurst and then completed a BSc in Kinesiology from University of Waterloo.
After working for a year with adults with developmental delay she attended medical school in Ottawa and then practiced family medicine in the Clarington area for 15 years.
Marlene was Chief of Staff at Bowmanville Memorial Hospital during the merging of the 5 local hospitals into Lakeridge Health.
Marlene is a past president of the Ontario College of Family Physicians. She also served on the Discipline and Registration Committees of the College ofPhysicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Wanting to have a more rural life, her family moved to Manitoulin Island where she continued to practice family medicine which included working with several First Nations communities.
After completing a MSc in Public Health she left family medicine for full time public health as the Medical Officer of Health/CEO for Timiskaming Health Unit based in New Liskeard. Five years later, wanting experience in a larger organization she transferred to Algoma Public Health based in Sault Ste. Marie.
Volunteer activities have included board member of Classic Theatre-Cobalt, Community Living Temiskaming South, and more recently Community Development Advisory Committee for Frontenac County. She currently resides in the North Frontenac area where she can enjoy hiking, cycling and paddling. She is married with 2 adult children.
Marlene has become increasingly concerned about the negative impacts of climate change on the health and well-being of our society and in particular vulnerable populations. The Green Party provides an exciting opportunity to support individuals, families, communities and businesses in their transition to a low carbon economy that will be sustainable for future generations.
