The Ontario Legislature today unanimously authorized the Speaker to bar independent MPP Randy Hillier from participating in the chamber. The house expresses its disapproval of MPP Hillier’s “continued disreputable conduct.”
Local Green Party candidate Marlene Spruyt agrees with the legislature’s decision and adds “Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston residents deserve better representation than this. We are now left with no representation, but taxpayers are still footing the bill for this member. In June, voters need to choose a candidate that represents and fights for the needs of the local communities at Queens Park.”
On top of being one of the organizers of the so-called “freedom convoy” that occupied Ottawa for three weeks, Independent MPP Hillier tweeted on January 24, 2022, “A terrorist speaks out to condemn Canadians to starvation” in response to a CTV interview with the Minister.
This is not the first time MPP Hillier has made a racist tweet towards a federal Minister. On June 1, 2020, Minister Ahmed Hussen spoke about his own experiences with anti-black racism. To which MPP Hillier tweeted “A guilty conscience?”.
MPP Hillier continues to reach new lows and needs to step aside immediately. Failing that, the election is less than 100 days away, and residents of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston deserve a representative with integrity.
